Clarifying the Problem

There are so many things to consider when selecting an action research topic. A good action research question should be meaningful, compelling, and important to you as a teacher- researcher. It should engage your passion, energy, and commitment. It must be important for your personal and professional growth; it should stretch you intellectually and affectively. The topic I’m thinking of doing action research on is the importance of financial literacy and how it affects college student’s lifestyles and the impact it has on their educational journey. The purpose of my study is to help college students manage their finances so they can be successful and debt free. I would like to also come up with an easier yet modern way to teach financial literacy.

My fundamental research question is, what is the effect on student achievement, when Lamar University students learn the content of financial literacy through project-based learning. The most appropriate type of data for me to collect is measured using quantitative results. I will use spreadsheets that I have created for my students to showcase their finances. I will also provide financial literacy counseling advice and expert testimony from previous college students and local professionals in the community. Based on the preceding responses, my research design can best be described as beneficial. The research will measure student achievement through financial literacy. Case studies that have been conducted at broad level shows that when students learn through project-based learning, student engagement and learning increases
