Creating a Culture of Helpfulness & Growth Mindset

Helpfulness & Growth Mindset In Margret Heffernan: “Why it’s time to forget the pecking order at work” video explains how society has convinced us to succeed in life we must compete amongst each other. She explains how work should be more sociable. The actual award is working with people. When colleagues build a rapport with each other they tend to perform better. I personally believe and agree with this statement from experience. For example, I worked as a bill collector for a multi-billion-dollar company for 3 years. This role had its challenges. The most difficult one though was competition. My coworkers and I would compete weekly to see whose numbers were higher. Whomever had the most numbers would receive a higher incentive bonus on there payroll check. This tension in the workplace was at an all time high. It wasn’t until my superior decided to take her team to dinner one evening, that we began to really connect with each other outside of work. This one dinner allowed us to build an unbreakable bond. The next day we decided to work with each other and not against, our numbers as a team were at an all-time high. They were so high that everyone on the team received a bonus. Power of Growth Mindset In Carol Dweck : “Developing a Growth Mindset” video speaks of the “yet” message. She explains how the power of “yet” is used as a learning curve to expand one’s knowledge. It challenges the mind to think about the most difficult obstacles. Adopting this concept changes the way you learn because it allows you to work hard and challenge yourself to do things you wouldn’t normally do. This concept can create conflict between the “now” and “yet.” Most of our students are more focused on the “now”, the next A or doing well on test versus learning something that will contribute to society. I personally have mix feelings about the growth mindset. I understand how “yet” is more beneficial because it helps expand my mind but, in the end, I still want the “now.” The goal is to get that A.
