The 4 Disciples of Execution

When you want to make a change, you first need to come up with a strategy. That’s the easy part. The hardest part is figuring out how to implement the strategy. The whirlwind or day job is significant in limiting strategy execution because it provides a sense of urgency. Most times people are too busy to think of realistic goals that will bring them out of their comfort zone. People become comfortable and its hard break certain habits. The 4 Disciples of Execution harness and hones, when properly and specially applied will allow you to carry out your strategy. When you make the use of focus, leverage, engagement, and accountability, not only will you execute your strategies, but you’ll also permanent behavioral change and increase engagement.

When examining lead and lag measures one needs to brainstorm a list of possible lead measure that will affect the WIG (Wildly Important Goals). Lead measures should be both predictable and influenceable. However, a lead indicator is a measure of activities that feed success with lag indicators. For example, as a financial aid counselor, it will be the number of students who seek financial literacy as beneficial. Most people spend too much time focusing on the lag indicators because it indicates if the goal was achieved or not.

Scoreboards should help your team keep track of everyone’s own lead indicator. Everyone on the team should update their own numbers on the scoreboard. There are four steps to creating a player’s scoreboard. First, think about what scoreboard format would be appropriate for your organization. Second, test your scoreboard. Is it simple, visible, complete, and quick to read? What makes it so? Where will you display it? Third, determine what materials will your team need to make their scoreboard build and personalize it. Lastly, consider your team members, and which one of them would make good scorekeepers. Remember, the board must be updated at least weekly to be effective. What individual or group do you trust with this responsibility? For example, my plan is to create my own scoreboard first and then I will share it with my primary team, the three other financial counselors that work with me on a day-to-day basis. Then, I will invite t hem to do the same with their team.
